Former Italy international Andrea Pirlo has decided to withdraw his candidacy for the position of Italy’s national team coach. This decision comes after criticism arose due to his association with the Russian betting company Fonbet. Pirlo, a 47-year-old World Cup winner, was considered a top contender to replace Gennaro Gattuso, but objections were raised regarding his role as a global ambassador for Fonbet.
Pirlo broke his silence on the matter, stating that he was informed the previous night that he was no longer being considered for the coaching position. He defended his professional conduct, emphasizing that he has always operated within the legal boundaries throughout his career, both as a player and a coach. Currently managing United FC in Dubai’s UAE Pro League, Pirlo clarified that his partnership with Fonbet was purely commercial and sports-related.
The controversy surrounding Pirlo escalated when he appeared at an event organized by Fonbet in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium alongside former Italy teammate Marco Materazzi. This event drew criticism, especially given the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Despite the backlash, Pirlo received support from Russia’s ambassador to Italy, Alexey Paramonov, who condemned the treatment Pirlo faced in his own country.
With Pirlo stepping back from consideration, the search for Italy’s next head coach continues. Paolo Maldini, the FIGC technical director and former AC Milan and Italy defender, is spearheading the efforts to find a coach who will lead Italy in their quest to qualify for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, following their absence from the last three editions.
