Former Leicester City and Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, aged 39, has announced his retirement from professional football. This decision comes after he failed to recover from a serious shoulder injury that had sidelined him since February. Schmeichel consulted specialists regarding the injury and concluded that it was time to retire.
The experienced goalkeeper sustained the injury during Denmark’s UEFA Nations League quarter-final defeat to Portugal in March 2025. Despite the injury, Schmeichel continued playing as Denmark had exhausted all their substitutes during the match. He later worsened the injury during Celtic’s UEFA Europa League defeat to VfB Stuttgart almost a year later.
Initially hoping to continue playing, Schmeichel was willing to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process to prolong his career. However, after seeking medical advice, he was advised against returning to top-flight football. Various surgeons and experts recommended that he step away from the game due to the severity of his shoulder injury.
Son of legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, Kasper began his professional career at Manchester City. He later moved to Leicester City in 2011, where he experienced the most successful period of his career. Notably, Schmeichel played a pivotal role in Leicester City’s historic 2015-16 Premier League triumph, making 40 appearances during that remarkable season.
Throughout his career, Schmeichel also achieved success with Leicester City, winning the FA Cup in 2021 and the FA Community Shield in the following season. Despite his desire to bid farewell on the field, Schmeichel expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences football has provided him. He emphasized the friendships and connections made during his career as the most significant aspects.
At the international level, Schmeichel earned 120 caps for the Denmark national team. He represented Denmark in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2020.
