Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti has spoken out against a recent demolition operation in Tikamgarh district. Bharti criticized the municipal action, claiming it unfairly targeted poor street vendors while ignoring encroachments by wealthier establishments. In a symbolic gesture, Bharti set up a handcart on Civil Line Road and sold ‘poha’ and ‘jalebi’, inviting back evicted vendors to resume their businesses.
The anti-encroachment drive conducted by the civic body and district administration on Monday resulted in the removal of several roadside shops and handcarts. This action impacted numerous small traders who relied on daily earnings for their livelihood. Bharti opposed the operation from the outset, deeming it unjust, and personally visited the affected area to support the vendors in restarting their businesses.
Expressing dismay over the situation, Bharti lamented the absence of BJP representation in both the Tikamgarh Municipality and the local Assembly constituency. She insinuated that under BJP leadership, the scenario might have unfolded differently. Bharti alleged a disparity in treatment, pointing out that while the pushcarts of poor vendors were dismantled, structures owned by influential individuals remained untouched despite violating regulations.
Bharti, who has been present in Tikamgarh for several days, swiftly responded to the demolition incident upon hearing about it. She criticized the harshness of the action, emphasizing the lack of prior notice or rehabilitation arrangements for the affected vendors. Bharti highlighted the need for reforms to start with those in better positions and reach the less privileged gradually, contrary to the recent events in Tikamgarh.
