Former MP and Maharashtra BJP leader Kirit Somaiya reported an arson attempt at his residence and office in Mumbai to the city’s Police Commissioner, Deven Bharti. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when an unidentified person set fire to a signboard outside his premises using a flammable substance. Despite the presence of CISF commandos providing security, the perpetrator managed to escape before being apprehended.
Copies of the complaint have been forwarded to the Navghar Police Station for further investigation. Along with the complaint, evidence including photographs of the damaged property has been submitted to aid in identifying the individual responsible for the arson attempt. Somaiya highlighted the security threat in his letter to the police department, emphasizing the need for prompt action.
Last week, Somaiya raised concerns with the Mumbai Police Commissioner regarding what he described as illegal appeasement practices. He urged the authorities to halt the imposition of false rules and restrictions related to religious processions and events. Somaiya specifically pointed out instances where the police allegedly enforced unusual regulations concerning Hindu religious activities near mosques, calling for reforms in the policing approach.
The former MP cited incidents during recent Ram Navami processions in Mumbai where the police imposed restrictions, citing Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines. He criticized the alleged practice of stopping processions for prayers at mosques and enforcing silence near religious sites. Somaiya highlighted instances where police reportedly silenced loudspeakers during Azaan calls, raising concerns over the handling of religious events and public gatherings.
