Former Pakistan captain and Under-19 team mentor Sarfaraz Ahmed is hopeful that his team can defeat India in the Junior Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday, aiming to replicate their success from the 2017 Champions Trophy. Despite losing the Group match against India in Birmingham, Pakistan bounced back with a remarkable victory in the Champions Trophy final at The Oval.
In a similar fashion, Pakistan’s Under-19 team faced a defeat in the Group match by a significant margin but now has a chance to clinch the title outright. India has dominated the U-19 Asia Cup, securing the title eight times since the tournament’s inception in 1989, while Pakistan’s lone victory in 2012 was shared with India.
Sarfaraz emphasized the importance of overcoming the initial defeat, drawing parallels to the 2017 Champions Trophy triumph. He shared his optimism with the players, urging them to create a memorable moment in the upcoming final. Sarfaraz, who led Pakistan to victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2006 Under-19 World Cup, attributed Pakistan’s previous loss to poor batting performance and encouraged the team to play aggressively without fear.
Pakistan’s journey in the ongoing eight-team event has been commendable, with victories in two out of three Group ‘A’ matches and a convincing win over Bangladesh in the semi-final. The team will rely on key players like Sameer Minhas, the leading run-scorer, and promising bowlers Abdul Subhan and Mohammad Sayyam in the final.
Looking ahead, Sarfaraz highlighted the significance of winning the final to boost morale for the upcoming Junior World Cup in Zimbabwe and Kenya, scheduled to commence on January 15. Pakistan will also participate in a tri-series with Afghanistan and Zimbabwe as part of their preparation for the ICC U19 World Cup.
