Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s wife, Chennamma Deve Gowda, will be laid to rest on Monday at the foothills of the Bettada Ranganathaswamy Temple near Haradanahalli in Hassan district, Karnataka. Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Pralhad Joshi, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and other leaders are expected to attend the funeral. Thousands have gathered to pay their respects to Chennamma, whose generosity and service to people over the years were remembered by former minister H.D. Revanna.
Chennamma ensured all visitors to the Deve Gowda household were served food and cared for students from nearby villages in the 1960s. Recalling her contributions, Revanna emotionally described her as a goddess. Despite facing an acid attack intended for others, Chennamma lived with the consequences for 26 years. The funeral procession will move from Holenarasipura to the Lakshminarasimha Temple area, where sacred water will be sprinkled on her mortal remains.
Arrangements have been made to accommodate around 50,000 people for the last rites, following Vokkaliga community traditions. The funeral is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. with the presence of several prominent leaders. Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Pralhad Joshi will pay their respects to Chennamma Deve Gowda. Chennamma passed away due to a cardiac arrest in Bengaluru on Saturday, July 18, 2026, after being admitted to the hospital with breathing complications.
