Graeme Smith, the former South Africa captain, believes that franchise cricket has revolutionized the cricket world, with the Indian Premier League setting the benchmark for other leagues globally. Serving as the SA20 commissioner, Smith has witnessed the sport’s evolution firsthand, from traditional Test cricket challenges to the rise of T20 franchise leagues.
Smith credits the IPL as a game-changer in modern cricket, emphasizing its massive commercial success, fan engagement, and the high-quality cricket it offers. He mentioned that the IPL has influenced the structure and operations of numerous leagues worldwide, becoming a model for modern franchise cricket.
The rapid growth of franchise tournaments, according to Smith, is a natural progression fueled by increased viewership and significant private investments in cricket. He also discussed the potential incorporation of multiple premier leagues into the future cricket calendar to accommodate the sport’s expanding landscape.
Smith envisions a future with four or five top-tier cricket leagues globally, each having its dedicated international calendar slot. Despite this, he believes that the IPL will continue to lead the way, attracting top players and maintaining significant interest. He suggests that other leagues can flourish alongside the IPL with a well-structured calendar that complements each competition.
Looking ahead, Smith proposed the idea of a global club competition involving elite franchise teams from various leagues. He highlighted the potential for a Club World Cup-style tournament featuring champions from leagues like the IPL, SA20, and Australia’s Big Bash, driven by private franchise ownership across multiple leagues.
Emphasizing the significance of cricket’s return to the Olympics in Los Angeles 2028, Smith sees this as a pivotal moment for the sport’s global expansion. He believes that the Olympic platform could inspire a new generation of cricketers, offering them the dream of competing for an Olympic gold medal, a unique aspiration that adds a fresh dimension to the game.
Cricket’s inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics, with matches scheduled between July 12 and 29 in Pomona near Los Angeles, signifies its growing presence in international multi-sport events, following recent appearances at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
