Drawing from his experiences in the IPL and SA20, Jonty Rhodes, former South Africa cricketer and Rotterdam Dockers co-owner, sees potential for the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) to enhance cricket development in Europe. Rhodes emphasizes the league’s aim to broaden Europe’s talent pool and boost grassroots cricket rather than focusing solely on winning. He expressed optimism about the league’s ability to produce players capable of excelling in top competitions like the IPL and BBL.
Rhodes, who has been involved in the IPL since 2009, highlighted how franchise leagues can reshape cricket beyond the professional level. He noted the success of the SA20 in reigniting public interest in cricket in South Africa, which had waned compared to rugby’s popularity. Rhodes stressed the importance of inspiring young people through successful sporting events, drawing parallels with his children’s enthusiasm during major tournaments.
The 55-year-old emphasized that the ETPL should not only target established European cricket nations but also focus on developing cricket across the continent. Rhodes, who coached Sweden’s team, acknowledged the passion for cricket in various European countries beyond Ireland, the Netherlands, and Scotland. He believes nurturing a broader cricket ecosystem will be crucial for the league’s success, aiming to develop both grassroots and top-class players throughout Europe.
