Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam is contemplating aligning his party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Thondarkal Urimai Meetpu Kazhagam (AIADMTUMK), with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) after failed attempts to reunify with the AIADMK. A significant portion of AIADMTUMK members are inclined to shift towards TVK, led by Vijay, to counter AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s stance against reunification.
Some members within AIADMTUMK are open to supporting the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), indicating differing opinions within the party. Panneerselvam, the AIADMTUMK leader, has postponed a final decision until after the Pongal festival, signaling a shift away from pursuing reunification with AIADMK towards an independent political path based on current circumstances.
In discussions with district secretaries, Panneerselvam found that over 80% of them prefer aligning with TVK, citing a perceived distance from the NDA and the potential impact on his political stature by rejoining the alliance for limited seats. These members believe that partnering with TVK would offer more significance and leverage in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political scenario.
Around 15% of functionaries, including some senior leaders, suggested supporting the DMK as a more practical choice, but this viewpoint was a minority stance during consultations, with most emphasizing the need for a clear political realignment. Senior figures in AIADMTUMK noted that ample time was given for reunification talks with AIADMK, but Palaniswami’s refusal effectively ended that possibility.
Several members argued that the focus should now be on defeating Palaniswami rather than seeking reconciliation. Panneerselvam reportedly expressed concerns to his inner circle about AIADMK’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections under Palaniswami’s leadership, highlighting significant party weakening. He indicated that any future alliance decisions would aim to address this decline and restore his political relevance in Tamil Nadu.
