Former Tamil Nadu Minister E.V. Velu confirmed that he will attend the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on July 15 for inquiries related to a Rs 3.23 crore Highways Department tender irregularities case. He dismissed accusations suggesting his recent trip to Singapore was an effort to avoid the investigation. Velu stated that he had informed the authorities about his overseas medical treatment plans and had requested time to appear with his legal representative upon receiving the summons.
Velu assured reporters that he will fully cooperate with the investigation during his appearance on July 15. Emphasizing his trust in the judicial system, he refrained from further comments as the issue is sub judice. Denying claims of fleeing the country to evade questioning, Velu explained that his visit to Singapore was pre-planned for routine medical check-ups at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. He disclosed his history of medical treatment at the hospital since 2016, with a recent visit in 2023.
The former Minister detailed his visa application process on June 15, approval on June 17, and travel booking for June 25. However, DVAC officials conducted searches at his residence on the morning of June 25, prompting him to delay his departure by a day. Velu departed for Singapore on June 26, where he underwent various medical examinations and remained under observation. He clarified that his trip was solely for medical purposes and not to evade the investigation.
The DVAC initiated the case against Velu, nine government officials, and a private contractor following a complaint by Arappor Iyakkam, alleging irregularities in Highways Department contracts amounting to a Rs 3.23 crore loss to the state exchequer. Searches were conducted at multiple locations, resulting in the seizure of official documents, digital evidence, assets, and Rs 40 lakh in cash. Subsequently, Velu was summoned for questioning, with his legal team requesting a 10-day extension due to his ongoing medical treatment abroad. Reiterating his commitment to cooperation, Velu affirmed his appearance before the agency on July 15.
