The West Bengal Police apprehended Debraj Chakraborty, a former Trinamool Congress councilor from Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, in connection with an ongoing disproportionate assets investigation. Chakraborty, who is the spouse of former Trinamool Congress MLA Aditi Munshi, was denied anticipatory bail by the Calcutta High Court last week.
Despite Chakraborty’s arrest, Munshi was granted interim anticipatory bail by the same court on the same day. The court considered the couple’s four-month-old daughter in granting bail to Munshi. Allegations of undeclared assets against the couple have surfaced, including claims of transferring assets worth over Rs 100 crore before the 2026 assembly elections.
The police initiated the probe against Debraj and Aditi regarding alleged undeclared assets. Both face accusations of possessing assets disproportionate to their income, asset concealment, and money laundering. Aditi, who lost in the recent West Bengal assembly polls, has also been accused of understating her assets in the election affidavit.
