Former Trinamool Congress councillor Debraj Chakraborty, arrested by the West Bengal Police in a disproportionate assets case, has been remanded to seven days in police custody by a district court. When brought before the Barasat Court, a crowd gathered, labeling him a “thief” and pelting him with eggs. Despite police intervention, some officers were hit by the thrown eggs while protecting Chakraborty.
Chakraborty, husband of former Trinamool legislator Aditi Munshi, wore a baseball cap to shield himself from the egg attack as he entered the courtroom. Following a brief hearing, the judge ordered his seven-day custody. Last week, the Calcutta High Court denied Chakraborty’s anticipatory bail plea but granted interim bail to his wife, Aditi, citing their infant daughter as a reason.
Debraj, who had been evading arrest, was apprehended in Purulia. Authorities are investigating the couple for allegedly concealing assets worth over Rs 100 crore before the 2026 Assembly elections. Aditi, a former MLA, is also accused of understating her assets in election filings. The couple faces charges of possessing unexplained wealth and money laundering.
