The police have called in former Trinamool MLA Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh for questioning over allegations of forcibly taking property. Atin Ghosh, a former Kolkata Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor, and his daughter are accused of cheating involving Rs 50 lakh. A hotel owner claimed that his property was seized under duress for a meager sum of money.
In response to the accusations, the police summoned Atin Ghosh and his daughter for questioning this week. The incident, involving alleged cheating, occurred in the Pragati Maidan police station area but was later transferred to Bidhannagar North police station. Atin Ghosh, however, stated that he has not yet received any police notice.
Atin Ghosh, a Trinamool leader who recently lost in the 2021 Assembly elections, is facing charges based on the hotel owner’s complaint. The police have registered an FIR against Atin Ghosh and his daughter, accusing them of offenses like land grabbing, intimidation, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. The property in question, a three-storey bungalow on two and a half kathas of land, is estimated to be worth around Rs 4 crore in the current market.
State Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Agnimitra Paul emphasized the need for a proper investigation following the filing of the complaint. Atin Ghosh’s daughter, Priyadarshini Ghosh, defended her father’s political career, stating that they would challenge the allegations in court. The police are actively investigating the matter, amid a series of actions taken against Trinamool Congress leaders in the state.
