Former US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, expressed concerns about recent trade disputes, visa restrictions, and growing anti-Indian sentiment in the United States impacting the US-India relationship. Speaking at the Capitol Hill Summit 2026, Verma highlighted the significant growth in ties between Washington and New Delhi over the past 25 years but cautioned about the current uncertain phase.
Verma noted that the US-India relationship had seen exceptional expansion since 2000, surpassing other bilateral relationships. He emphasized the importance of people-to-people ties, security and defense, trade and economics, and clean energy as key drivers of the partnership’s development over the last two decades.
Despite recent challenges such as restrictions on Indian students and rising anti-Indian rhetoric online, Verma remained optimistic about the long-term trajectory of the relationship. He highlighted the deep institutional ties and support from the Indian American community as reasons for his optimism, underscoring the significance of the US-India partnership.
Reflecting on the 2008 US-India civil nuclear agreement, Verma recalled the efforts made to strengthen the relationship, emphasizing the mutual commitment between the two nations. He praised the partnership’s progress and expressed confidence in its enduring importance for both countries.
