Former US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, expressed concerns about the current state of US-India relations. He highlighted issues such as tariffs, declining student visas, and reduced clean energy cooperation. Verma emphasized the significance of the US-India partnership, calling it America’s key alliance of the century.
Verma noted the substantial growth in the relationship over the past 25 years but pointed out new challenges it faces. He underlined the importance of the partnership for US national security interests, echoing former President Obama’s view on its pivotal role in this century.
The former Ambassador mentioned the remarkable progress in defense and trade ties between the US and India. He highlighted the exponential growth from zero defense trade in 2000 to $20 billion and a significant increase in two-way trade.
Verma also acknowledged the surge in people-to-people connections, with Indian students now forming the largest foreign student group in the US. However, he raised concerns about the current strains on the partnership, including high tariffs, reduced immigration, declining student visas, and weakened clean energy collaboration.
Amid growing worries among Indian students and professionals regarding US visa policies, Verma highlighted a sharp decline in Indian student visa approvals. He cautioned that other countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Britain were actively competing for international students.
Verma emphasized India’s future role in global power dynamics, projecting it to have the largest middle class, highest number of college graduates, and most internet users by 2030. He stressed the strategic importance of closer US-India cooperation, citing past American presidents’ views on the matter.
The former Ambassador called for reforms in global institutions to align with evolving geopolitical realities. He emphasized the need for changes in institutions like the UN Security Council to ensure they adapt to the current world order.
Verma also highlighted the increasing collaboration between India and the US in emerging technologies, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and critical minerals. He emphasized the potential of joint research efforts in these fields.
