Former US National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster has raised concerns about Pakistan’s involvement in mediating between the US and Iran, suggesting it operates as a “client” of China with potential “ulterior motives.” McMaster highlighted China’s interest in supporting the current Iranian regime, indicating a possible bias in Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

President Donald Trump canceled the second round of talks between Iran and the US in Islamabad, prompting McMaster to question Pakistan’s neutrality in brokering discussions. He criticized Pakistan’s security establishment, accusing it of maintaining contradictory stances by purportedly aiding counter-terrorism efforts while also supporting adversaries.

McMaster emphasized Pakistan’s historical use of terrorist organizations for foreign policy objectives, dating back to the late 1940s. He linked Pakistan’s actions to broader geopolitical competition, particularly China’s economic ties with Iran, which he believes bolster the Iranian regime’s financial stability and regional influence.
