Ujjal Biswas, the former West Bengal Correctional Services Minister, was arrested for allegedly hoarding state government relief materials. He is the second ex-minister from the previous cabinet to face corruption charges, following Sujit Bose’s recent arrest. Biswas, a former Trinamool legislator, lost in the recent assembly polls and faced tension when relief materials were found at his residence.
Crowds gathered outside Biswas’s residence, protesting and shouting slogans as police detained and later arrested him. Despite being labeled a “thief” by locals, Biswas refuted the accusations. In a separate incident, Trinamool Congress councillor Sushmita Bhattacharya and her husband were arrested on corruption charges, adding to the list of arrested party members.
Allegations of extortion and hoarding government relief have surfaced against various Trinamool leaders post the change in government. The police have been actively investigating and arresting individuals facing accusations, including several Trinamool councillors in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Raids are being conducted across the state as part of the ongoing probes.
