Swarup Biswas, the brother of ex-West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, was apprehended by Kolkata Police for his involvement in a vandalism incident at Yuva Bharati Krirangan during Lionel Messi’s event last December. The arrest is linked to extortion claims against technicians in the Bengali film industry.
The arrest followed a complaint from a female make-up artist associated with a Tollygunge-based organization. She accused Swarup Biswas of preventing her from receiving work assignments for two years and extorting money through threats. Swarup Biswas, who previously led a film technicians’ organization, has faced long-standing extortion allegations.
Aroop Biswas, a former state power minister and TMC legislator, represented Tollygunge in the West Bengal Assembly. In the recent elections, he lost to BJP’s Papiya Adhikari. Swarup Biswas will appear in court on Friday following his arrest by Kolkata Police.
