Four 17-year-old boys were recently apprehended for a vicious assault on a man using a sickle near the Tiruttani railway station in Tiruvallur district. The juveniles, allegedly inebriated, not only attacked the victim but also filmed the incident on their mobile phones, later sharing it on social media platforms. The victim, identified as Suraj, a 34-year-old from Kolhapur district in Maharashtra, sustained severe injuries during the assault.
The incident unfolded near the railway quarters adjacent to the Tiruttani railway station. Passers-by alerted the police, who promptly arrived at the scene and rescued Suraj, who had suffered deep lacerations. Initially treated at a nearby government hospital, he was later transferred to the Tiruvallur Government Hospital for further medical attention. Investigations suggest that the accused youths, residents of Nemili near Tiruttani, were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.
According to reports, the juveniles initially encountered the victim on a train heading to Tiruttani, where they menaced him by brandishing a knife at his neck, capturing the act on a mobile phone. Upon disembarking from the train, they forcibly took Suraj to a secluded spot near the railway quarters and assaulted him with a sickle, inflicting serious wounds. Authorities indicated that the assault seemed to be premeditated with an intent to cause harm. The perpetrators filmed the entire incident and shared the video on social media platforms, including Instagram, seemingly seeking attention.
After a prompt investigation, law enforcement reviewed CCTV footage from the railway station and surrounding areas, aiding in the identification of the suspects. Subsequently, all four juveniles were apprehended and presented before the appropriate authorities in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act. The incident has evoked shock and censure from the local community, railway passengers, and political figures, urging stringent action against the culprits. Police are conducting further inquiries to determine if others were involved and to establish the complete chain of events leading to the assault.
