A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ahmedabad has handed down a three-year rigorous imprisonment to four individuals, including a former insurance surveyor, in connection with two fire insurance fraud cases. The cases, dating back nearly 23 years, involved fraudulent insurance claims that resulted in over Rs 31 lakh in losses to New India Assurance Company Ltd.
The convicted individuals are Jatin Bhanubhai Joshi, a former surveyor from Vadodara, along with private individuals Madhusudan Bhavsar, Ila Patel, and Vijay Kayasth. The court also levied a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the convicts. The CBI initiated the cases on July 16, 2003, following alleged fraudulent fire insurance claims using forged documents submitted to New India Assurance Company Ltd.
The first case, related to irregularities during 2002-03, involved accused individuals including Ronald Amarjeet James, a former Senior Divisional Manager of New India Assurance Company Ltd in Surat, and others. The CBI accused them of engaging in a criminal conspiracy to cheat by fraudulently obtaining fire insurance claims through false documents, causing a loss of Rs 11,52,233 to the insurance company.
The second case, concerning alleged fraudulent insurance claims in 2001-02 on behalf of M.D. Patel & Co., implicated individuals such as Ronald Amarjeet James, Manubhai Patel, Nainesh Suryakant Patel, and Jatin Joshi. The CBI alleged a conspiracy to secure fire insurance claims using false documents, leading to a wrongful loss of Rs 20,08,595 to the Surat office of New India Assurance Company Ltd.
Following investigations, the CBI filed charge sheets in June 2004. During the trial, three accused individuals passed away, resulting in the court abating proceedings against them. The long-pending prosecution in the two insurance fraud cases concluded on May 8 with the sentencing of the surviving accused by the special CBI court.
