A Station House Officer (SHO) and three other policemen have been suspended in Samba district, Jammu and Kashmir, for their alleged mishandling of a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case. The suspension was ordered by Samba Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Anuj Kumar, as part of a zero-tolerance approach towards lapses in dealing with crimes against children. An internal investigation has been initiated to ascertain the facts and responsibility in the case.
In response to complaints about the handling of the POCSO case, the district police leadership has taken immediate corrective actions. Additionally, a Special Police Officer (SPO) has been transferred to Goran Police Station. The ongoing inquiry will thoroughly assess the allegations and appropriate measures will be implemented based on the investigation’s outcomes.
The POCSO Act, 2012, is India’s primary law safeguarding individuals under 18 from sexual abuse, exploitation, and pornography. It is a gender-neutral legislation that emphasizes the emotional well-being of the child and mandates Special Courts for swift trials. The act includes provisions for strict penalties, ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty for severe offenses, covering various forms of harassment including physical, sexual, and online/electronic abuse.
