Four workers tragically lost their lives in Surat, Gujarat, after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning an underground effluent treatment tank at a jewelry manufacturing unit. The incident took place in the Ashwini Kumar area of the city during a routine cleaning operation of the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) tank where waste from the cleaning process is treated.
The workers, including three laborers and a company supervisor, collapsed inside the tank due to exposure to poisonous gas. Despite efforts by the Surat Fire and Emergency Services, all four men were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Initial investigations suggest a lack of safety protocols and protective equipment during the hazardous maintenance work.
Authorities are looking into possible negligence regarding safety procedures and the absence of protective gear for the workers. A case of accidental death has been registered, and a detailed inquiry is underway to determine the factors that led to this tragic incident. Further actions will be based on the findings of the investigation and postmortem reports.
