Marc Guyon, the Councillor for French Citizens Abroad in Hong Kong and Macau, described the ongoing conflict in West Asia as a “big mess” and emphasized the need for its prompt resolution. He supported France’s decision to refrain from involvement in the US-led military actions, citing that the conflict did not directly involve France and highlighted the immense costs associated with war globally.
The conflict in West Asia commenced on February 28 after Israel and the US conducted strikes, triggering retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran on US and Israeli facilities in the region. Guyon expressed his personal view on France and the United Kingdom’s choice to abstain from participating in the military actions, stating that it was not their responsibility to intervene in the Middle East amidst pressing issues within their own countries.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently stated that a military operation to liberate the Strait of Hormuz would be impractical due to the extensive time and risks involved. Macron emphasized the necessity for a ceasefire and diplomatic negotiations with Iran to address the situation effectively.
