French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the US for its tariff threats concerning Greenland, labeling them as “unacceptable.” He emphasized that if these threats are confirmed, Europe will respond collectively and in a coordinated manner. Macron, expressing France’s commitment to national sovereignty, highlighted the country’s decision to participate in an exercise organized by Denmark in Greenland.
Macron, in response to US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement, stated that France will not be swayed by intimidation or threats. Trump had declared plans to impose a 10% tariff on goods from several European countries, including France, over the Greenland issue, with a potential increase to 25% in June if no agreement is reached.
Greenland, a self-governing territory under Denmark, has been at the center of this dispute. Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland has sparked tensions, with Macron’s firm stance reflecting a broader European sentiment against such coercive tactics. Nordic leaders, including Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, have also condemned the threats, advocating for dialogue over pressure in resolving disputes among allies.
