In a significant development in the case of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg’s death, North East India Festival (NEIF) organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta has submitted a new bail application to a special fast-track court in Guwahati. The court has set the hearing for April 22. Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar mentioned that the defense initially requested an earlier hearing on April 13, but the court rescheduled it for April 22.
Mahanta, a key accused in the case, had previously filed for bail but later withdrew it. The latest bail application comes as the trial progresses daily in the fast-track court. The case revolves around the death of Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19 last year while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore.
The incident occurred a day before Garg was supposed to perform at an event organized under the NEIF banner. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by Assam Police’s CID conducted a thorough investigation and filed a chargesheet in December. The chargesheet implicated seven individuals, including Mahanta, with four of them facing murder charges, escalating the seriousness of the case.
