A new low-pressure area is set to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal and nearby regions by July 3, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This formation is likely to bring increased rainfall activity to parts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring Puducherry in the upcoming days. The IMD’s recent weather bulletin highlighted the persistence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, leading to the anticipated low-pressure system.
This evolving weather pattern is forecasted to enhance monsoon conditions in eastern India and result in sporadic rainfall in northern Tamil Nadu. The IMD has predicted moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds in some areas of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday and Thursday. Residents are advised to stay vigilant for lightning and strong winds during thunderstorms.
In contrast, southern Tamil Nadu is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall in isolated spots during the same period. While widespread heavy rainfall is not foreseen in the southern districts, localized showers are expected to persist under favorable atmospheric circumstances. The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Thursday in the hill regions of Coimbatore district and the districts of The Nilgiris and Theni, known for intense rainfall during the southwest monsoon.
Authorities are on alert, especially in vulnerable hilly areas, where heavy rain could lead to localized disruptions. For Chennai, a partly cloudy sky is anticipated on Wednesday, with chances of light rain and thunderstorms in some parts of the city during the evening or night. Daytime temperatures are likely to hover around normal levels, with cloud cover and intermittent showers offering temporary relief from the prevailing humidity.
Meteorologists will closely monitor the formation of the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days. The system’s intensity and movement will play a crucial role in determining the distribution and extent of rainfall across Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. The IMD has advised the public, especially those in districts under thunderstorm and heavy rain alerts, to stay updated on official weather information and take precautions during adverse weather conditions.
