The issue stems from an audio announcement allegedly made by an LDF candidate, T.P. Ramakrishnan, implying religious-based canvassing by Muslim League workers. The UDF claims this message aims to stoke communal tensions and divide voters.
The UDF’s candidate, Fathima Thahliya of the Indian Union Muslim League, has criticized the CPI(M) for allegedly fueling communal discord. She alleges that the voice in the recording belongs to a CPI(M) leader and that the candidate was aware of the announcement. The UDF has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission and the State Police Chief, providing evidence of the incident.
The controversy gained attention when a local resident recorded the audio from the campaign vehicle. The UDF has submitted details, including the vehicle’s registration number, to the authorities. While the CPI(M) denies any association with the vehicle, it has not filed a counter-complaint. Ramakrishnan, the LDF candidate, has pledged to address any campaign misconduct if proven.
The UDF has criticized the delay in filing an FIR, alleging political interference.
