Funeral ceremonies for Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, began in Tehran with the presence of senior Iranian officials, foreign dignitaries, and high-level delegations from around the world. The proceedings were emotional, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi seen in tears during the farewell ceremony.
Elaborate security measures were put in place for the ceremonies, as stated by Tehran Governor Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian, ensuring a smooth event. The Grand Mosalla Prayer Grounds in Tehran opened early in the morning, with authorities urging mourners to plan their arrival accordingly and indicating the possibility of an earlier opening if needed.
In a gesture of respect, Baghdad authorities announced a city shutdown to facilitate funeral processions related to the late Iranian leader. India was represented at the funeral by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain.
Russia also sent a high-level delegation to the ceremony, with Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev attending the funeral events in Tehran. The ceremony was attended by top Iranian political and judicial figures, along with international leaders and representatives from various countries.
