Gael Monfils, a former French Open semi-finalist, faced defeat in the tournament’s first round against compatriot Hugo Gaston, marking the end of his Roland Garros journey. Despite a valiant effort, Monfils lost to Gaston 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0 on Court Philippe-Chatrier, concluding his 19th appearance at the Grand Slam event.

Monfils, a 39-year-old veteran, bid farewell to Roland Garros with a career record of 40 wins and 18 losses, as per the ATP Win/Loss Index. His most notable performance dates back to 2008, reaching the semi-finals before succumbing to Roger Federer. Additionally, Monfils achieved three quarter-final finishes at his home Slam.

During the match, Monfils, in the presence of tennis peers and legends, displayed a resurgence after a slow start, winning eight consecutive games to push the encounter to a fifth set. However, fatigue set in, leading to Gaston’s eventual victory after a grueling 3 hours and 22 minutes on the court.

Monfils’ final set struggles were evident as he managed to secure only eight points, with Gaston dominating the decider. Despite the defeat, a touching tribute video featuring messages from tennis greats like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic was played, honoring Monfils’ illustrious career.
