Government-owned GAIL (India) Ltd has announced a significant investment of Rs 1,736.25 crore to establish a wind power project in Maharashtra. This move is part of GAIL’s strategy to enhance its renewable energy portfolio and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. The project will involve setting up 178.2 megawatts of wind power capacity, adding to GAIL’s existing renewable energy projects.
GAIL’s decision to invest in this wind power project aligns with its goal of reducing carbon emissions. The company aims to complete the project within 24 months from the contract award date. Currently, GAIL operates solar energy projects totaling 27 MW across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, in addition to its wind power projects in Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The company has set ambitious targets to reach net zero by 2035 by reducing Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions, with further reductions in Scope-3 emissions by 2040. To achieve these targets, GAIL plans to boost its renewable energy capacity to 3.4 GW by 2035. Additionally, GAIL recently conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for its upcoming R&D Centre in Sohna, Haryana, aimed at enhancing its technological capabilities in clean energy and core business areas.
The new R&D Centre, situated in Industrial Model Township, will serve as an advanced innovation hub spanning 30 acres. It will house cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure and pilot-scale facilities to bridge the gap between research and practical deployment. With a focus on various research verticals including natural gas applications, renewables, and biotechnology, the Centre will play a crucial role in developing sustainable energy solutions and pipeline technologies.
