The Gauhati High Court has rejected Siddhartha Sarma’s bail plea, a key figure in the alleged murder conspiracy related to the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. This marks the second time the High Court has turned down his request for bail. Sarma, who previously managed Garg, had also been unsuccessful in seeking bail from a Fast Track Court due to the serious nature of the accusations and the ongoing investigation.
Sarma’s latest bail application denial comes as he challenges certain court orders and seeks to reopen his firm, Mahabir Aqua, while requesting the unfreezing of his bank accounts that were attached during the investigation. He has also asked the court to consider findings from Singapore authorities regarding the singer’s death. Despite his efforts, the Gauhati High Court has maintained its stance on rejecting his bail plea following the Fast Track Court’s decision.
The case revolves around the death of Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19 last year while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore, a day before a scheduled performance at an event under the North East International Festival (NEIF). While Singapore Police found no foul play in Garg’s death, the Assam CID formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter based on allegations from the singer’s family and others. Sarma, among seven accused individuals, faces charges of criminal conspiracy in connection to the incident.
With the recent denial of his bail application, Sarma will remain in judicial custody as the high-profile case progresses through trial. The case has garnered significant public interest in Assam due to Zubeen Garg’s widespread popularity.
