The gems & jewellery exports increased by 26.5% to $2212.6 million in June 2026, marking a positive shift after a prolonged decline. In the Q1 FY27 period (April–June 2026), exports rose by 0.04% to $6612.21 million compared to the previous year.
Gross imports also saw growth, rising by 10.06% to $1720.6 million in June 2026. However, there was a decline of 5.9% to $4974.8 million in the Q1 FY27 period. This growth is significant amidst the sector’s challenges due to global economic headwinds.
The export volume of cut and polished diamonds surged to $846.7 million in June, an increase of 8.7% from the previous year. Despite this, the April–June exports in this category slightly decreased by 4.1% to $2,720.2 million.
The trend of rising diamond jewellery demand in the international market, coupled with a preference for SEZs over DTA for trade, suggests positive holiday season sales. Analysts predict an improvement in sentiment leading into the Oct-Dec quarter.
Gross imports of rough diamonds stood at $700.3 million in June 2026, showing a decline of 32.4% in the first quarter year-on-year. The drop in rough diamond trade is attributed to Indian jewellery manufacturers clearing inventory before new purchases due to overseas demand volatility.
Finished lab-grown diamonds have gained significant traction in international markets due to a price-conscious consumer approach. This category is seen as a lucrative alternative to natural diamonds for price-sensitive audiences and is expected to strengthen in the future.
Gold jewellery exports notably surged by 54.5% in June to $1,087.7 million, driven by studded jewellery. Silver and platinum jewellery exports also saw gains ranging from 20 to 27% in the first quarter.
