Germany views India as a top choice under its country-specific migration policy, with Florian Laudi, Germany’s Commissioner for Multilateral Affairs, highlighting India’s importance as a source of skilled workers. Laudi emphasized the mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries, describing it as a “triple win” situation benefiting migrants, Germany facing a labor shortage, and India with a surplus of labor. He noted the significant contributions of Indian workers in Germany, particularly in science and technology, with their qualifications reflected in above-average incomes compared to the German median.
The Commissioner mentioned that in 2025 alone, 180,000 Indians joined Germany’s workforce, marking a substantial 656% increase over the past decade. Laudi emphasized the strategic partnership between India and Germany, citing shared values such as freedom, democracy, and commitment to the rules-based international order. He highlighted the special focus on migration cooperation, noting India’s crucial role as a partner in skilled worker migration.
India and Germany signed the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement (MMPA) in 2022, paving the way for skilled workers, students, and researchers to migrate between the two countries. Laudi underscored ongoing efforts to streamline processes for migrants, including degree recognitions and digitalizing visa procedures. Both nations are collaborating on initiatives like mutual recognition of professional qualifications and expanding access to German language courses and exams to promote skilled migration.
Laudi also pointed out the significant presence of Indian students in German universities, with over 60,000 students attending annually for three consecutive years. He highlighted that more than half of these students secure employment in Germany post-graduation. Additionally, Germany is attracting Indian apprentices to its renowned vocational training system, with nearly 10,000 Indian apprentices gaining skills in various fields.
