A giraffe named Shivani passed away at the Bannerghatta Biological Park near Bengaluru due to a medical condition known as caecal torsion. Shivani, a three years and ten months old female giraffe, had not been eating for three days despite veterinary treatment. Despite efforts, the giraffe succumbed to the condition around 11 a.m. on Thursday.
The giraffe had been transferred to the Bannerghatta Biological Park from the Mysuru Zoo in 2024. Preliminary post-mortem results indicated that the giraffe’s death was a result of caecal torsion, which involves the twisting of a section of the intestine. Samples of the giraffe’s internal organs have been sent for further examination to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals Laboratory.
Recent incidents of wild animal deaths at the Bannerghatta Biological Park, including tiger cubs, a zebra, and leopards, have raised concerns about animal safety, diseases, and management practices. Investigations have been initiated due to multiple deaths from infections and suspected negligence in the care of captive animals.
