Former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath has expressed doubts about all-rounder Cameron Green being chosen over Steve Smith in the squad following Australia’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2026 during the group stage. Green, known for his all-around skills, underperformed with the bat, scoring only 24 runs in three matches. McGrath highlighted that Green’s limited contribution with the ball raises concerns about his place in the team.
McGrath emphasized that by selecting Green over Smith, the selectors are implying that Green is a superior player. However, McGrath questioned the justification for Green’s inclusion in the team if he is not actively contributing with the ball. Australia, once considered tournament favorites, faced challenges due to injuries before the event and a lackluster performance in the group stage matches, leading to their premature elimination.
Reflecting on Australia’s unexpected early exit from the T20 World Cup, McGrath noted the diminishing aura surrounding the Australian team. McGrath observed that the team’s reputation no longer intimidates opponents as it did in the past, attributing this shift to Australia’s recent performances. Additionally, former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie also raised concerns about the performances of Green and Cooper Connolly in the tournament, questioning their selection in the team.
Australia is set to play their final T20 World Cup match against Oman at the Pallekele International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Friday, marking the end of their campaign in the competition.
