The Global Chess League (GCL) is gearing up for its fourth season with the Season 4 Player Draft set for July 29 in Mumbai. The league will commence in Bengaluru from September 3–13. Notable inclusions in the draft are Magnus Carlsen’s return after a year and Divya Deshmukh, the current FIDE Women’s World Cup champion, making her debut.
The player pool for Season 4 comprises 36 Grandmasters spanning different generations, including World Champions, World Cup winners, Olympiad medallists, and prominent figures from the international chess arena. Franchises will have the opportunity to build balanced six-player teams across various categories, incorporating both seasoned players and fresh talents.
The Global Chess League has revolutionized elite chess by introducing a franchise-based mixed-team format and enhancing the fan experience with technology-driven features. Season 3, held in India for the first time, set new benchmarks with AI-powered in-arena elements, improved broadcast quality, and the growth of the GCL Contenders program. Alpine SG Pipers emerged as champions in the last season.
Peeyush Dubey, Chairperson of the Global Chess League, expressed enthusiasm for Season 4, highlighting the league’s ability to unite top players globally and engage new audiences. Bengaluru, known for its sporting culture and chess heritage, will host the upcoming season, with franchises gearing up for a competitive tournament.
Teams participating in the player draft will form six-player squads across four categories: one Icon, two Superstar Men, two Superstar Women, and one Prodigy, within a six-board rapid format. The draft list features renowned players like Viswanathan Anand, Javokhir Sindarov, Koneru Humpy, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Volodar Murzin, and Leon Luke Mendonca, offering a blend of experience and emerging talent for Season 4.
Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, emphasized the significance of the draft in shaping team competitiveness for the upcoming season. The league’s unique format stresses team composition alongside individual skills, with the player pool boasting a mix of champions and rising stars. As the focus shifts to the Season 4 Player Draft on July 29 in Mumbai, the six franchises will select their squads for the Bengaluru event, culminating in the championship match on September 13.
