Customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad discovered 24 foreign-origin gold biscuits weighing 2,799.3 grams and valued at Rs 4.26 crore hidden inside an IndiGo aircraft arriving from Dubai. The gold, found in pouches concealed in a speaker box, was of 999.0 purity (24 carat).
The seizure, made during rummaging operations on IndiGo flight 6E-1478, was valued at Rs 4,26,89,325 in the domestic market. Authorities suspect an attempt to smuggle the gold into India, as no one claimed ownership of the contraband. Further investigations are ongoing to identify the smugglers and potential links to larger smuggling networks.
This incident is part of a series of gold smuggling cases at Ahmedabad airport, with previous instances involving passengers concealing gold in various forms to evade detection. The airport has been a target for smuggling attempts, indicating a persistent challenge for authorities.
