Alphabet-owned Google is considering new investments in India, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, servers, and drones, as revealed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The company is assessing opportunities in AI infrastructure development and electronics manufacturing within India. This move aligns with the global trend of increased investments in AI capabilities and data center expansion.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced a significant capital expenditure increase to $185 billion this year, primarily driven by aggressive investments in AI infrastructure. At the Google Cloud Next 2026 summit, Pichai disclosed that over half of Google’s machine learning computing resources would be directed towards its cloud business. Moreover, Google has initiated a $15 billion investment plan in Andhra Pradesh to establish a ‘gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem’ in Visakhapatnam.
As part of this endeavor, Google has commenced work on the India AI Hub project in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel. This project, labeled as Google’s most substantial investment in India’s digital future, encompasses India’s first gigawatt-scale AI hub across three data center campuses, including a 1 GW hyperscale AI data center. The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated nearly 600 acres of land for this ambitious AI infrastructure project.
During the groundbreaking ceremony on April 28, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized India’s potential to emerge as a reliable global partner in electronics manufacturing and supply chains. He urged global technology firms, including Google, to enhance local production of servers, graphics processing units (GPUs), and semiconductor chips in India. This call underscores the government’s commitment to bolster domestic electronics manufacturing capabilities.
