The government disclosed that 1,987 infrastructure projects, valued at Rs 42.50 lakh crore, are under scrutiny by 17 Central Ministries and Departments as of May. Among these, the transport and logistics sector lead with 1,476 projects amounting to Rs 23.50 lakh crore, emphasizing the emphasis on connectivity-driven infrastructure growth. Notably, about 51.34% of the revised project cost, totaling Rs 21.82 lakh crore, has already been spent, indicating steady progress in project execution, as per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
A significant portion of these projects, 817 in number (41%), have achieved over 80% physical progress, while 280 projects (14%) have surpassed 80% financial completion. The ministry highlighted a balanced project pipeline, with projects spread across early and advanced implementation stages. The ongoing infrastructure projects include 813 mega projects with an original cost of Rs 31.58 lakh crore and 1,174 major projects amounting to Rs 5.52 lakh crore, according to government data.
The projects are concentrated in initial (0–20%) and advanced (81–100%) stages, indicating a mix of newly-initiated projects and those nearing completion. While physical progress surpasses financial progress in the 81–100% range, financial advancement is more pronounced in the early stages, reflecting expenditure patterns in project implementation. The Ministry continues to enhance monitoring of Central Sector infrastructure projects through its PAIMANA platform, facilitating improved tracking, timely reviews, and data-driven decision-making across ministries.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways leads with 1,149 projects and a share of Rs 10.95 lakh crore (26%) of the total revised project cost, underscoring its pivotal role in national infrastructure development. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways is overseeing 261 projects with a revised project cost of Rs 8.79 lakh crore (21%). The Ministry of Coal is managing 121 projects valued at Rs 2.23 lakh crore (5%). Additionally, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and the Department of Water Resources, River Development & GR are handling 109, 101, 50, and 40 projects, with associated revised costs of Rs 5.14 lakh crore, Rs 5.77 lakh crore, Rs 3.65 lakh crore, and Rs 2.04 lakh crore, respectively.
