The Soil Health Card Scheme has issued more than 25.89 crore cards, and the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) now covers 18,786 clusters across 8.80 lakh hectares. Public efforts like the Khet Bachao Abhiyan aim to encourage sustainable practices. Over 70,000 Krishi Sakhis have been trained to provide soil health advisories at the grassroots level.

Digital tools such as geospatial mapping and artificial intelligence are enhancing soil assessment and advisory services. With a significant portion of the workforce engaged in agriculture, soil health directly impacts rural incomes and food systems. India’s focus on sustainable soil and land management includes initiatives like the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture and the Soil Health Card Scheme.

Efforts like the National Mission for a Green India and Carbon Credit Trading Scheme support practices that boost soil organic carbon levels. The National Mission for a Green India targets creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5-3.0 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030. Progress is evident, with an additional carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent established between 2005 and 2021, aligning with India’s commitments under its Nationally Determined Contribution.
