The government is set to evaluate further steps against Meta after reviewing the company’s formal response to a notice concerning Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) allegedly promoted through paid Instagram ads, as stated by IT Secretary S. Krishnan. MeitY is currently awaiting Meta’s official reply before determining the subsequent course of action. Krishnan emphasized the importance of assessing Meta’s response before making any decisions.
Following concerns about paid Instagram ads promoting Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material, the government issued a notice to Meta, instructing Instagram to disable all related content. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had directed officials to summon Meta for an explanation regarding the presence of such material in ads and requested details on the company’s actions to address the issue. Meta responded by outlining its efforts to combat child sexual abuse material and enhance safety measures for young users.
Meta’s blog highlighted its use of AI-powered detection systems and enforcement measures to identify and remove abusive content. The company pledged to invest in technology, improve ad review processes, and bolster safeguards for protecting young individuals. The government’s scrutiny stemmed from reports suggesting Meta’s recommendation algorithm promoted videos containing child sexual abuse material, raising concerns about platform safety and content moderation.
Krishnan also discussed India’s potential in infrastructure development, envisioning the country as a hub for global operations. He emphasized the role of AI in this vision, highlighting its significance as a catalyst for India’s growth as a key player in managing global operations.
