The government has announced plans to integrate Central scientific and innovation schemes with educational institutions in West Bengal. This initiative aims to foster innovation, scientific learning, and research-oriented talent development among the youth. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, recently met with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata to discuss the integration of major Central schemes related to science, research, innovation, and startups in the state.
The meeting resulted in decisions of regional significance, including the launch of a study on arsenic poisoning in affected districts of West Bengal through CSIR institutions. Additionally, collaborative clinical and drug trial-related research on cancer and antimicrobial therapies will be initiated, involving various scientific institutions, government medical colleges, cancer hospitals, and AIIMS-linked medical networks. Dr. Singh emphasized West Bengal’s robust scientific and academic ecosystem, highlighting its potential for scientific research, clinical trials, and innovation-driven collaborations.
West Bengal is set to witness the implementation of student-centric and women-centric schemes of the Department of Science & Technology in schools and colleges. Flagship programs such as INSPIRE, INSPIRE MANAK, Vigyan Jyoti, KIRAN, and WISE will be expanded and executed in a coordinated manner to enhance scientific temper, innovation, and the involvement of students and women in the science and technology sectors. Dr. Singh expressed optimism that the convergence of scientific institutions, academia, healthcare infrastructure, and innovation ecosystems could pave the way for science-led regional development in eastern India.
A preliminary coordination meeting involving the State Science & Technology Department and senior officials from Central scientific ministries and departments is scheduled to take place in the coming days to chart out an implementation roadmap.
