The Government Railway Police (GRP) successfully captured a wanted criminal who had been stealing from train passengers by impersonating a policeman. The miscreant, identified as Sanjay Byapari, was apprehended by Naihati GRP officers based on CCTV footage. Byapari, originally from Chinaurah in Hooghly district, had been residing in North 24 Parganas district.
Sanjay Byapari employed various disguises to commit thefts on trains, including posing as a porter, hawker, and most commonly as a policeman. He targeted passengers’ bags, stealing mobile phones and valuables. Recently, Byapari, dressed in a police constable uniform, boarded the Sealdah-bound Balia Express and stole a doctor’s bag containing important documents.
The doctor, who boarded the train from Bandel station, noticed his bag missing before reaching Sealdah station. Fellow passengers informed him that the thief, disguised as a policeman, had alighted at Naihati station with the stolen bag. Following a zero FIR filed by the doctor with Sealdah GRP, Naihati GRP examined CCTV footage leading to Byapari’s arrest. Authorities are interrogating him to determine the extent of his criminal activities.
