Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a meeting at the Surat Municipal Corporation office to assess the flood situation in Surat following heavy monsoon rains. The meeting, attended by various officials including Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, focused on ongoing relief efforts in the inundated city.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, State Finance Minister Kanu Desai, State Health Minister Praful Pansheriya, and other senior officials joined the review meeting. The officials discussed the impact of the recent heavy rainfall that led to flooding in several parts of Surat, causing disruptions in transportation and residential areas.
Authorities have been actively involved in relief and restoration work as water levels remain high in low-lying areas of the city. Surat received approximately 358 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, resulting in severe waterlogging and flood-like conditions across the city.
The heavy downpour led to the evacuation or rescue of 7,386 residents from flooded areas by teams from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and other agencies. Despite a decrease in rainfall, floodwaters persisted in affecting residential areas, roads, markets, and industrial zones, with a focus on draining water and restoring essential services.
Multiple rain-related fatalities have been reported in the state due to the intense rainfall. Emergency response teams are on standby as authorities continue relief efforts and monitor weather conditions in South Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of further heavy rainfall in parts of the state, prompting officials to stay vigilant and prepared.
