Six out of the 12 semiconductor projects sanctioned under the ‘India Semiconductor Mission’ by the central government are now located in Gujarat. The Union Cabinet has given the green light to two additional projects valued at Rs 3,936 crore for the state, as stated by Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia. The new projects involve investments of Rs 3,068 crore by Crystal Matrix Limited in Dholera Special Investment Region and Rs 868 crore by Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) in Surat.
The approved projects are anticipated to create over 2,230 high-tech jobs along with numerous indirect employment opportunities. Gujarat has been highlighted as the primary destination for semiconductor investments in the country, with Modhwadia expressing satisfaction over the approvals. He mentioned that Gujarat has taken the lead in the sector by being the first state to introduce a dedicated semiconductor policy.
Modhwadia emphasized that under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat is already witnessing the development of four major semiconductor projects worth approximately Rs 1.24 lakh crore, in addition to the two recently sanctioned projects. The recent approvals under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s India Semiconductor Mission are expected to further enhance Gujarat’s semiconductor ecosystem and establish the state as a significant hub for chip manufacturing in India.
The decision by the central government has bolstered the entire semiconductor value chain in Gujarat, covering chip designing, fabrication, packaging, and testing, noted Modhwadia. Crystal Matrix Limited is set to establish the country’s first compound semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera SIR. The facility will focus on producing Mini and Micro-LED displays based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, which are presently imported into India.
The Dholera plant is projected to manufacture 72,000 square meters of display panels and 24,000 sets of RGB wafers annually. These displays are expected to be utilized in smartphones, electric vehicle dashboards, and premium television screens. Suchi Semicon Private Limited, on the other hand, will establish a Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Surat with an investment of Rs 868 crore. The facility aims to produce over 103.03 crore semiconductor chips per year to cater to the demands of the automobile and industrial automation sectors.
Gujarat State Electronics Mission (GSEM) is playing a crucial role as a single-window facilitator for semiconductor investors in the state, simplifying administrative processes. GSEM will extend support to companies in areas such as land allocation, water supply, electricity, and other infrastructure facilities to ensure the timely execution of the projects.
