Gujarat Giants’ head coach, Michael Klinger, admitted that their loss to Mumbai Indians in WPL 2026 was due to fielding mistakes despite the team’s strong commitment. The Giants, who faced their first defeat of the season, struggled with sloppy fielding, including dropped catches and misfields, which contrasted their earlier high standards. Klinger highlighted the team’s solid performance until late in the innings when things fell apart.
Reflecting on the match, Klinger emphasized the importance of avoiding errors against top batters like Harmanpreet, who was given three chances. Despite the costly mistakes, Klinger praised the team’s effort and training, acknowledging the need to work on fielding. He mentioned the team’s hard work with the fielding coach and other coaches, expressing confidence in their improvement.
In response to all-rounder Anushka Sharma’s injury, Gujarat Giants made a strategic change in their batting order by promoting Kanika Ahuja to No. 3. Ahuja, previously batting at No. 8, played a crucial role by scoring 35 runs off 18 balls, injecting momentum into the innings with boundaries and sixes. Klinger commended Ahuja’s performance, explaining the decision to elevate her and praising her execution.
Ahuja’s impressive display at No. 3, a new position for her in WPL, showcased her ability to excel in the powerplay, reaching 20 runs off just nine balls. With Anushka’s absence due to injury, Ahuja is expected to continue in her role for the upcoming matches as Gujarat Giants aim to improve and enhance their fielding standards.
