Gujarat Giants are gearing up for the 2026 Women’s Premier League season with a focus on resolving issues concerning their overseas players and opening combination, as highlighted by former India captain Anjum Chopra. The team made significant investments in international players like Sophie Devine, Georgia Wareham, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, and Kim Garth during the previous mega auction.
After finishing at the bottom in 2023 and 2024, Gujarat Giants showed improvement by securing the third spot in the league stage in 2025. Anjum Chopra emphasized the importance of balancing the team with four international players, particularly ensuring a spot for Sophie Devine in the playing eleven and deciding the opening pair alongside Beth Mooney.
Anjum Chopra noted the challenge of choosing between Beth Mooney and Yastika for the wicket-keeping role, especially with Yastika recovering from an ACL surgery. The competition for places in the starting line-up is expected to be intense, with limited spots for Indian players in the team.
Player fitness will be crucial for Gujarat Giants during the three and a half weeks tournament, with a focus on maintaining a sustained performance in the bowling department. Anjum Chopra highlighted the significance of individual player fitness, considering upcoming series post the Women’s Premier League.
The upcoming Women’s Premier League, following India’s ODI World Cup victory, is anticipated to boost fan engagement. Anjum Chopra expressed optimism about the growing excitement around women’s cricket, emphasizing the evolving nature of the game and the positive trajectory it is on.
