The Gujarat government initiated a collaborative effort with banks and police to enhance the state’s response to cyber fraud. Led by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, a high-level meeting at GIFT City in Gandhinagar involved top bank officials, senior police officers, and representatives from the Reserve Bank of India. More than 5,300 bank officers and employees from branches statewide participated via video conference to bolster coordination in combating digital fraud.

Discussions primarily focused on strengthening cooperation between banks and law enforcement to reduce financial losses faced by victims of online scams. The meeting also delved into analyzing reported cyber fraud cases to detect emerging patterns and devise preventive strategies against evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals. One key proposal highlighted was the establishment of a real-time mechanism enabling banks to promptly freeze funds transferred by fraud victims post-complaint, thereby increasing the chances of fund recovery.

Gujarat stands as the pioneering state to undertake such a comprehensive initiative. Deputy Chief Minister Sanghavi stressed the necessity of analyzing cyber fraud cases and data to thwart evolving crime patterns and safeguard citizens from falling prey to scams. Emphasizing the critical need for swift action, Sanghavi underscored that even a minor delay in freezing an account could devastate a family’s financial security. He urged bank personnel to exercise heightened vigilance, especially with elderly customers vulnerable to digital fraud schemes.

Senior citizens were noted as frequent targets of cyber fraud, with Sanghavi urging bank staff to be cautious when elderly clients attempt premature withdrawals or large transactions. The meeting also recognized the vital role played by police and bank officials in preventing financial losses due to cyber fraud. It stressed the importance of real-time intelligence sharing between banks and law enforcement to bolster efforts in combating cybercrime effectively.
