The Gujarat government has eliminated the 20-meter length requirement for mechanized fishing boats to access VAT relief on diesel. This change extends the benefit to all eligible mechanized fishing vessels, including deep-sea boats, benefiting over 18,000 registered boats in the state. The decision was made during a State Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Government spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani announced the amendment to the existing scheme offering VAT relief on diesel for mechanized fishing boats. Previously, only boats under 20 meters were eligible for this benefit. Vaghani emphasized that this move would now allow all mechanized fishing boats in Gujarat, including deep-sea vessels, to take advantage of the scheme. More than 18,000 registered mechanized fishing boats in the state are expected to qualify for the diesel VAT relief following this change.
Under the revised scheme, eligible mechanized fishing boats will be granted a ‘Diesel Card’ by the state government. Cardholders will receive VAT relief on diesel of up to Rs 15 per liter. If the applicable VAT is lower than Rs 15 per liter, the subsidy will be capped at the actual VAT amount. Vaghani highlighted that this policy adjustment aims to provide equal benefits to fishermen operating boats of all sizes, reducing their daily diesel expenses and enhancing their livelihoods.
Fishermen are required to register their boats on the Real Craft Portal and hold a valid fishing license to be eligible for this scheme. Vaghani urged fishermen who have not completed these formalities to do so promptly to benefit from the scheme.
