The Gujarat government is set to start buying summer moong from registered farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) beginning July 7. This decision was made during a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar. The move aims to safeguard farmers from financial losses during periods of market price drops.
For the upcoming 2025-26 marketing season, the central government has established the MSP for summer moong at Rs 8,768 per quintal. The procurement process in Gujarat will kick off on July 7. Whenever market prices dip below the support price, summer moong will be procured in the state under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) of the central government’s PM-AASHA scheme to shield farmers from financial setbacks.
According to government spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani, a total of 14,383 farmers from various parts of Gujarat have enrolled to sell their produce under this initiative. To facilitate purchases from these registered farmers, the state has identified 51 procurement centers. Registered farmers will be notified of their procurement schedule via SMS and are required to bring their moong stock to the designated procurement center upon receiving the message.
The procurement process will be guided by a productivity norm of 1,200 kg per hectare for the 2025-26 season, aligned with each farmer’s cultivated area. However, the procurement will be capped at a maximum of 1,500 kg, or 75 maunds, per farmer. Minister Vaghani has urged all registered farmers to take advantage of this scheme promptly, emphasizing the importance of timely participation.
The procurement exercise will be conducted under the Price Support Scheme, which allows for the acquisition of specified crops at the MSP whenever market prices dip below the government-fixed support price.
